If you are a fan of The Colbert Report you would know that whenever the opportunity arises, Stephen never misses an opportunity to take a dig at major News Network Enterprises in particular, Fox News. You could say, Fox walked into this one when their White House correspondent, David Garrett decided to leave because, as he puts it, he wants to “Talk less and think more.” There is no way Stephen is going to miss out on that one. The phrase “too easy” comes to mind.
If you think that was funny, Stephen’s piece on talk show host, Glenn Beck had me cracking up. He totally built up Beck as a megalomaniac who is Gandhi, Martin Luther King, Howard Beale, and Jesus, all in one. By the time this is published, Beck would have made his historic presentation, “On Restoring Honor” at the steps of the Lincoln Memorial. Did it do more than what Stephen suggested is Beck’s major point that …….. 2+2= ….. 4? Colbert’s deafening silence at the end, thoroughly milked the laughter.
Colbert’s feature on the alleged gruesome killing of a taxi driver in New York which has all the indication of a hate crime, showed how public media facilitated such an act. It really is one of those contradictions of sorts where something is so blatantly clear yet we marvel at why or how it happened. Stephen makes this point very articulately.
Stephen’s interview with NBC’s chief foreign correspondent, Richard Engel was more interesting that it was funny. Engel talked about Operation “New Dawn” which is supposed to be the next phase of the U.S. occupation of Iraq but more importantly, Colbert’s substantive question as to why it was that it was Engel that was able to reveal the scoop that Operation Iraqi Freedom was done, posed more questions than answers. In the end, Engel said it fell to him because “most reporters didn’t want to do it.” As a person with a news background, I am flabbergasted. There is a story in that somewhere.
By the way, did I hear Stephen correctly when he said he would be off next week (Week of Aug.30) ? If that is true, it is going to be a boring week.
