Californication: A review by D. Murphy

Premium television holds a franchise of well written and portrayed shows that don’t pitch in the same league as basic cable. Californication the show that follows the life of Hank Moody, a self loathing, alcoholic has-been writer trying to make it through his middle ages, is one such show that makes the extra few bucks worth while. He’s a father, a hippy and a joy to watch. From the moment we entered the life of the bad ass novelist we saw common trends, with women, with his own self philosophy he lives by and with his family. Sharing the spot light is his classy yet attracted to the dangerous, ex girlfriend and mother of their child, Karen. She has a lack of interest in rekindling a relationship with Hank, who boyishly flirts with her constantly, making their unconventional love and relationship extremely entertaining and sweet. Hank’s best friend and agent, Charlie Ruckle who on the show is going through his own marital problems, mostly a lack of sexual lust for his wife, is a parallel to Hank minus the swagger and bad boy edge. Adjacent to Charlie is his spunky yet soulful wife Marcy, who’s easily Karen’s parallel, is also the rock Karen wishes Hank was.

The show takes place is sunny California, hence the unoriginal title of the show (I think the Chilli Peppers nabbed it first). Essentially the current state of Hank is his path to rock bottom, but his friends and daughter keep him afloat, along with booze and miscellaneous women. Hank often suggests that California is flawed in the sense of what they are representing. It’s an acid trip of a series the complicated love life of Hank and the trouble he finds himself in, but ultimately the fact remains, you can’t find this kind of show on basic cable.
