Did Someone Drop Dead?

I enjoyed the musical numbers in Drop Dead Diva this season and hope they continue these next year, though maybe without Paula Abdul. Brooke Elliott can both act and sing, it’s amazing she hasn’t been on Glee yet. Though with the trend on her show towards musical interludes, she doesn’t need to be. It’s interesting that the ‘musical number with lawyers’ technique was used in another legal show I loved, Eli Stone, and that Eli’s lawyer ex in that show, Natasha Henstridge, played the lawyer ex in this episode. In fact, another Eli alumni, Matt Lescher, who played Eli’s brother, was the guest star in last week’s ‘The Bachelor’ episode. I wonder if any fans out there have figured out whether there is a connection between the staff of the two shows or whether these three things are just coincidences?

As for the Fred and Stacey plotline, I think it’s a mistake. I mean, from a logistics perspective, they are living under the same roof, that’s even worse than dating someone you work with! A show is always better with a ‘will they or won’t they dilemma.’ If Fred’s heart gets broken again, what can he do? He can’t take off on another trip as he is Jane’s guardian angel and Jane needs him more than ever considering how this season just ended! Though with the way it ended, many fans might want him gone for seeming to have a hand in the tragic ending.

So how did it end? Well that question is exactly what made this episode the very definition of ‘cliffhanger.’ The writers really went for it. Just having Grayson tell Jane he had proposed to Vanessa would have been enough of a cliffhanger to end the season, but to take it further showed real chutzpah on the writer’s behalf. At the table Grayson asked Jane to be his ‘best woman’ because of the special connection he felt they had and as he subsequently after when she fled the restaurant he seemed to realize the depths of her feelings and maybe something changed inside him? After the car hit him as Jane held him in her arms sobbing her heartbreak, he stirred, opened his eyes, and called her Deb. Were we to take that as a sign that he was dying and therefore was able to see her? Will he die and inhabit someone else’s body or will someone inhabit his? I would have loved to have been a fly on the wall in the writer’s bullpen as they wrote this ending and the first script for next season.

The happiest day of my life was the day DVR's became available giving me the ability to watch even more TV! In a city where people proudly proclaim they "don't own a TV", I proudly proclaim, "I do own and watch TV. In fact, for those who say TV is not educational, I have learned the meaning of 'cardial infarction', how to hotwire a car, who Bruno Magli is and how honeybees mate. When I am not watching TV, I write and now as a writer for TBSYNW -I get to do both.
