‘Past’ Damages – Episode 1.2 ‘Jesus, Mary and Joe Cocker’

As Ellen sits in the police interrogation room, the detectives find David’s body in the tub. Katie worries about Frobisher’s lawyers and her statement for Patty. Katie’s birthday gift to Ellen, a pair of Statue of Liberty bookends, appears to be the murder weapon. Happy Birthday to Ellen!

The last time we saw Tom Shayes, he was handing Patty Hewes her prize for convincing Katie Connor to testify against Arthur Frobisher. Though Tom had been fired, he’s still on Patty’s payroll. Under the table this time. His new assignment – report on both Ellen and Katie.

Frobisher is feeling the heat from his wife to end the lawsuit quickly. His hired thug is terrorizing Katie and would really like to kill her. Will Frobisher give him the go-ahead?

Ellen is being masterly manipulated by Patty. Patty finds her a gorgeous apartment on the Upper West Side, and treats her like the minion she just might be. One thing we know she’s learned is to never hover in the doorway. Patty hates that.

Katie is lying. The only question is how many lies is she telling? Is her one night stand the real smoking gun of the Frobisher Florida weekend? Is there anyone she won’t lie to?

Just after the detective tells Ellen she knows Ellen didn’t kill David, we see the bloody bookend in Ellen’s hand.

The web continues to spin……

Ted Danson’s performance as Arthur Frobisher is one of the highlights of this episode. He gives the character so many shades that one moment you can’t believe anyone could be so cruel and the next you feel sorry for him. There are no remnants of Sam Malone in Arthur Frobisher.

That ability to flip the switch is one of the best things about the show. You  never know what you’re going to get from any character at any point. Close is a master. Patty Hewes can bark at Ellen one minute and give her the keys to her new found apartment the next.  She can buy Katie a new puppy one minute and call her a liar the next. Tate Donovan as Tom Shayes is Patty’s whipping boy one minute and hiring a possible hit man the next. Rosy Byrne switches from naive to manipulative.

It’s always just enough to keep you guessing as to what’s coming next.

I live in western Canada. My favourite shows are Damages and Dexter. I believe John Hodgman may be the funniest person alive. http://twesternweezy.blogspot.com/
