Review – Damages 3.2 “The Dog is Happier Without Her”

The Tobin case becomes more involved…as do Tom and Ellen. A new lead is discovered and Tom’s death becomes more mysterious.

Boots discovered in a dumpster lead to Patty and Tom finding a new lead in the Tobin case. With Ellen’s help, Tom finds the owner of the initials DMM.

When Joe Tobin finds out that his father may have had a mistress, he goes to visit her, to threaten her. He actually does more than threaten…after drinking half a bottle of vodka, the no longer ‘recovering’ alcoholic hits her with his car.

Tom’s lost everything in the Ponzi scheme, having unwittingly invested in Tobin’s firm. The news begins to drive him to desperation.

Ellen becomes friendly with her co-worker, but might have something going on the side with Tom. Are they suddenly more than friends? Were they up to something behind everyone’s back? Just what are they up to? Whatever it is, I think it’s going to be huge!

Is Ellen the main suspect in Tom’s death? Tom was stabbed three times, but died by drowning. We last see Ellen looking pensively out at the water.

I’m enjoying Martin Short’s portrayal of sleazy lawyer Lenny Winstone, his has a little ‘Grinch’y smile that he uses so well.  A side of Martin Short I’ve never seen before, he fits in with the cast who all play their roles with such ambiguity that it’s difficult to tell who’s good and who’s bad. Shorts devilish little smirk says a lot more than his character does. Whoever would trust this man must have a few screws loose.

The Tom and Ellen relationship becomes quite mysterious in this episode. Are they having an affair, are they working on something behind everyone’s back? Did Ellen kill Tom? Seems unlikely as the two are good friends, but who knows for sure.

In last week’s episode Joe Tobin seemed to good to be true, turns out he is. Deciding to take his father’s hidden money, and being revealed as an alcoholic about to fall off the wagon, Joe isn’t the choir boy he first appeared. I want to like him, but I don’t think I should. His father is a crook and a con man, but Joe seems just a little worse with his pretensions of being the good guy.

I think I’ll enjoy watching Patty bring these guys down.
