A twist in the “Damages” tale. A completely linear episode, no flash forwards. Unusual for the show, it made for interesting viewing as they left no connects between current time and 5 months in the future. Just how will things play out?
The gloves begin to come off in Campbell Scott’s performance as Joe Tobin. After starting out as a good guy, he’s revealing the character to be completely untrustworthy. A schemer with no conscience. Unlike Ted Danson’s slightly goofy bad guy of the last two seasons, Joe Tobin is a darker, deadlier type. He’d rather Danielle Marchetti die than tell Patty Hewes what she knows. Even if she knows nothing.
Scott’s performance is, so far, Emmy worthy in my opinion. He’ll be more than worthy of a knock down drag out with Glenn Close in later episodes, as I’m sure Patty will rip into Joe at some point.
Ellen spends much of the episode at her parents house in New Jersey having dinner with her parents, sister and nephew. Discovering that her sister is a crack addict shakes up Ellen’s world. Her seemingly perfect family is revealed to be seriously dysfunctional. It’ll be interesting to see how this new information plays out and how it will affect the case, or Ellen’s decision to stay out of it.
Patty’s got the upper hand with both Lenny Winstone and the DA’s office in this one. She seems to be holding all the cards right now. Will it last?
