Project Runway has suddenly turned into Project Pick-on-Michael-Costello, and this week we got to see some of these designers’ true colors. Despite the fact that Michael won a challenge two weeks ago, the other contestants claim that he has “terrible construction” and “doesn’t know how to sew.” What it boils down to is that some of these designers (ahem, Ivy) are petty and insecure. All they can do is criticize Michael’s skills and try to attack his character, while Michael has been nothing but polite and honorable throughout the show. Ivy, Valerie and Gretchen think they’re the goddesses of the runway, but they need to get this attitude in check immediately.

Speaking of Gretchen, she is reeling from last week’s show where Tim Gunn put her in her place. She video chats with her mommy in a move that’s supposed to make us think she actually has a heart, and reflects, “a scar can turn into an open wound if you don’t let it heal.” Deep Gretchen, real deep.

This week’s challenge was a fun one: turn some butt ugly bridesmaids dresses into something chic and wearable. And, in PR style, there was a twist. The designers had a public showcase before the runway show, where the public voted for their favorite look. Some were loved (Mondo and Michael C.) and some were not (Michael Drummond, who created a monstrosity of lace and tried to blame it on his model’s size.) Drama queen Ivy tried to start a nasty rumor that Michael C. was trying to sabotage her. I’m sorry, honey, but you’re just not that important. In fact, I’m not even sure you’re much competition.

On the runway tensions ran high. Mondo won the most votes at the showcase, but would he win the overall challenge? The top three were: Mondo, Christopher and Michael C. Michael C. won the challenge, but not the hearts of his fellow contestants. They were shocked and appalled, but the laugh is on them. On the bottom were Valerie (who has always said she’s “always a bridesmaid, never a bride”), Michael Drummond and Peach. At the end of the day, Peach was eliminated, and even though she wasn’t the strongest designer she was always fun to watch. But, I suppose we must say Auf Wiedersehen to somebody. For now that person isn’t Michael C., and I can’t wait to see how that plays out next week.
