Animal planet’s captivating show, Whale Wars, just got that much more entertaining when a multi million dollar boat was hit by a Japanese whaling harpoon ship, allegedly on purpose. To take a step back, Whale Wars is about the struggle between good and evil, well…between whalers and anti-whalers, you pick a side. The Sea Shepherd Organization, founded by Paul Watson (ex-Greenpeace leader) which sets out to end or rather interrupt the whaling efforts of a Japanese fleet of whaling ships. The highly dramatized reality show is filmed on board the Sea Shepherd fleet, the Steve Irwin, the Bob Barker (named for their large financial contributors) and the Ady Gil (now sunk). The multinational crews of the three non profit organization’s boats have three things in common, they hate whaling, they love confrontation and they are huge geeks. Like in every reality tv show, the participants are fun to watch and you immediately surface a love or hate mentality for each. Among the personalities are Paul Watson, the admiral if-you-will of the fleet and captain of the Steve Irwin an extremist who promises he is willing to die for the whales, along with all of his companions onboard. Other crew members like Peter Hammarsted, another ostentatious extremist,is a delight to watch. Peter is your average science nerd, but off in the Arctic Ocean literally fighting whalers. They do talk a lot of game, but then again they back it up with action.

Every episode consists of violent protests, between throwing stink bomb substances or trying to submit a line of rope under the bow of the whaling boats to tangle the propellers and thus stop the ships, the series is action packed. The Ady Gil, which was a extremely fast vessel, only seventy eight feet long was used as a stealth boat, but what do anti-whalers need with a stealth boats that can challenge any vessel in terms of speed? Well, nothing. But it adds glamour. When all is said and done, the Sea Shepherd’s flashy boats and large financial backing is clearly not making change for whales that are still being hunted and killed in the Arctic seas, however it does make for a terrific show.
